Frequently Asked Questions
Dear 6mR World Cup Participant,

We hope you find this comprehensive FAQ useful in making the commitment to come to Newport, RI for what promises to be a memorable event. You will find attached all of the resources, prices and time-line required to plan for the event. We bring this to your attention now because the discount for early entry registration will expire on July 1st and we would like as many owners/syndicates take advantage of this savings as possible.

There is a lot of detail in the body of this FAQ, but the message is simple: To save money and frustration:

1) Register for the event before the early entry discount expires on July 1st.
2) Contact Angus and/or Simon from Peters and May logistics and get end to end logistics with one invoice.

We look forward to seeing you in Newport RI for a memorable World Cup.

How do I register for the World Cup?

Registration is hosted on the Sail Newport website. Click HERE to go to the site. We apologise in advance to our overseas vistors, but credit cards from outside the United States must be manually processed. Therefore, to pay with an international credit card, please print this FORM and fax it to Sail Newport for payment at 401-846-7245.

You MUST still complete the online registration for the event, but when the credit card payment page comes up, leave all payment information blank and continue to hit the SUBMIT buttons until complete. You should receive an immediate e-mail confirmation. If you have any questions, please email Katie Barker with any questions.

When is the World Cup?

The World Cup will be sailed from September 8th to 12th with the 13th held in reserve. The 7th will be a day of measurement and registration. The Notice of Race contains complete details.

What racing happens prior to the World Cup?

The North American Fleet invites visiting yachts to compete in several events taking place leading up to the World Cup. (These additional events require separate entrance fees and registrations)

-- The International 6mR Invitational Regatta, August 28th, 29th and 30th.
Ida Lewis Yacht Club will be the center for regatta activity. How do I get my 6mR to Newport, RI and in the water and then home again?

Thomas Lundquist kindly negotiated a fantastic transport deal, out and back for $5,000 with Wallenius Wilhemsen Logistics (WLL).

Such an attractive rate has its limitations, so please get in touch with Simon or Angus (44-2380-480-471) of Peters and May. They are the preferred logistics provider and can get your WLL booking and your end-to-end logistics sorted out. They can help as much or as little as you need.

Aside from all of the customs clearance issues, the biggest issue is how to get your boat from Newark, NJ to Newport, RI (200 miles) and in and out of the water. By using Simon and Angus, you will be able to streamline the entire logistics of boat moving from your home port, to the event, in and out of the water and home again and have only one invoice and one point of contact. This is the best way for you to save time and money. Please get in touch with them as soon as possible to make it easy for them to troubleshoot your campaign and eliminate negative surprises.

Yachts that arrive by land will be commissioned by Newport Shipyard, a full service yard. They have offered a reduced rate of $600 per boat (roughly half price) to 6mR World Cup participants for the following services.

$600 Base Package:
1) Launch/Haul directly from/to trailer
2) Step/Unstep Mast

Representative Additional Charges
Block and Stand: $180 ($5/ft.)
Emergency Haul/Launch $580

In order to take advantage of this rate, Newport Shipyard asks that the $600 base package be single source billing through Peters and May. Competitors must fill out a Standard Information Yard Agreement. All other charges will be off the standard billing rates.

Can I come early?

Yes, we hope you do!!!

But your 6mR World Cup entrance fee only covers moorage from September 3rd to September 13th. If you plan to come earlier or stay later, you will need to establish your own mooring or dockage. Should you require a mooring in addition to the dates covered by the World Cup (3rd to 13th of September), moorings can be rented from Oldport Marine Services

The Newport Harbor Master limits the lending and borrowing of moorings to just seven days. If you are looking for just a short-term borrow, (less than 14 days) volunteer William Wladyka might be able to help. He can be e-mailed: bwladyka@gmail.com

What about longer term storage?

Should you require further staging or storage for the event, Joe Loughborough of LMI is happy to assist. Before you store your boat for an extended period after the event, you should check and make sure that your return will still be valid from WLL. Aside from having quality hauling, storage and staging facilities, Joe has extensive contacts with reputable shipwrights, sail lofts and riggers in the event something goes wrong. A former 6mR owner himself, Joe is happy to make his resources available to participants. (www.lminewport.com)

Saturday, September 12th, the 6mR fleet will enjoy a seated dinner and awards ceremony under the tent at the Museum of Yachting, Fort Adams.

Who is running the racing?

Sail Newport is the Organizing Authority and Dr. Robin Wallace will serve as PRO. There will be an ISAF Jury headed by Dick Kempe of Bermuda.

Dr. Wallace, one of the regions most experienced PRO’s, will determine whether we sail in or out of Narrangansett Bay – based on the day’s weather patterns.

Will I have access to the NYYC?

Yes.

Each entered boat will be given the opportunity to register a valid credit card with the club when they arrive, and receive a temporary ID card granting house privileges.

This temporary privilege card can be used for cocktails and dinner throughout your stay in Newport.

Where should I stay?

We have arranged a variety of options throughout Newport, including discount hotels, as well as top-notch rental homes. All of the resources you need to select and book what is right for you are all in one place on the accommodations page of the event website.

While we have put together hundreds of options, reserving and securing accommodations are your responsibility.

Where should I fly in from Europe?

Boston Logan Airport is probably best. For more detail, click here.

I am thinking about selling my boat after the World Cup?

The New England 6mR fleet has seen pretty explosive growth in classics, going from one boat in 2002 to ten in 2009. There has also been interest in the moderns. If you are interested in finding out if there is a buyer for your boat, feel free to get in touch with either Hans Oen (hjo@midocean.us) or Toby Rodes (tobyrodes@yahoo.com) of the New England Fleet.

Final Racing Checklist

4) Third party liability insurance valid in the US in the amount of $300,000 or greater.
