The vision of Sail Newport (www.sailnewport.org) began on September 26, 1983 when Australia II triumphed over Liberty in the 7th race of the America's Cup - taking the cup from Newport for the first time in 132 years. In response to the loss, local visionaries began to create an organization that would keep Newport as the sailing capital of the world. As a result, Sail Newport’s mission is to promote and operate affordable public sailing instruction,
rental programs and to create opportunities to attract new sailors to the sport. A non-profit 501 (C) (3) organization Sail Newport manages more regattas annually in Newport than any other organization. Recent regattas include the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials regattas as well as the M 30 World Championship with Peter Reggio serving as PRO.
Other Racing Information
What is Sail Newport?
Who will serve as PRO?
For the 6mR 2009 World Cup, our PRO will be Dr. ARG Robin Wallace, who in 1977, was instrumental in putting together the RC for future America’s Cup Challenger series events in Newport, and was one of Sail Newport’s founders in 1983. Currently Dr. Wallace is the chairman of the U.S. Sailing Race Management Committee, and serves as an ISAF International Race Officer (IRO). We are fortunate and proud to have Dr. Wallace as our world class PRO.
Who will serve as Jury Panel?
The World Cup Planning Committee has extended invitations to International Judges and expects to make a formal announcement shortly. The aim is to have a fully ISAF compliant jury panel.
Where will we sail?
We will sail where Dr. Robin Wallace feels we will have the best conditions for a race. There are two primary course locations; North of the Newport bridge and above Gould Island or “Inside”. The second area is off Castle Hill, or “Outside”. See chart below.
